The buzzword “synergy” which was once a derogatory term for corporate entities, is now back to the scene as companies look for ways to collaborate across departments in remote or hybrid environments for example. However, this time it’s not being used as a pejorative for corporate work but rather to describe a deep collaborative process that’s widely sought-after.
Synergy is founded on the idea that the whole is greater than the totality of its components. The positive synergy of teams allows them to achieve greater results than they would have been able to on their own. It also gives team members a chance to be themselves at work by utilizing their unique perspectives, abilities and communication styles.
Negative synergy on the other hand can drag down teams and cause them to produce subpar deliverables despite the individual capabilities of each team member. This is usually caused by miscommunication or conflicts over responsibilities, roles and schedules.
To avoid these problems it is vital that teams establish the foundation of trust and cooperation by clearly defining the goal for the project and clearly defining the role of each team member in this. The most efficient way to accomplish this is by using the process of collaborating on role mapping in which each team member works together with their peers to establish a clear and concise record of who’s accountable for what and when. This can save teams a lot of energy, time and conflicts by reducing confusion from the beginning. It makes it easier for managers, if needed, to assist and coach.
